Dr. John E. Kelly III is the Co-founder, Chairman and CTO of Global AI, the world’s first sovereign AI hyperscaler. Widely known as one of the most influential technology leaders of our time, he has driven major breakthroughs in semiconductors, artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and U.S. government–industry innovation.

He is widely recognized for his impact on semiconductors, artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and U.S. government–industry innovation.
He holds a B.S. in Physics from Union College and an M.S. in Physics and Ph.D. in Materials Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, along with three honorary doctorates.
Before founding Global AI, Dr. Kelly spent more than 40 years at IBM, ultimately serving as Executive Vice President.
He led the company’s global research and IP strategy, cybersecurity and privacy operations, and its 100,000-person technical community. He also oversaw more than $60 billion in hardware, software, data center, and AI businesses. As the architect of IBM Watson, he helped build the foundations of modern AI by pioneering advances in natural-language processing and data-driven computing. Dr. Kelly also spearheaded the creation of the Albany Nanotechnology Center, now a cornerstone of U.S. semiconductor R&D and a catalyst for tens of billions of dollars in global investment. Many of the world’s most significant semiconductor breakthroughs originated from programs he designed. In addition, he played a pivotal role in the formation of GlobalFoundries by advising AMD during its restructuring and shaping both the development of the New York fabrication facility and the acquisition of IBM’s semiconductor manufacturing operations. Dr. Kelly is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of the IEEE. His honors include the SIA Noyce Award, IEEE Noyce Medal, IEEE Frederik Philips Award, and multiple lifetime achievement awards.
